An Invitation from the Secretary-General

Dear Delegates and Faculty Advisors,

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the forty-third session of the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference, to be held from November 12th through November 15th, 2009.

You might ask, why UPMUNC? In response, I have three words for you - magnitude, prestige, and spirit.

UPMUNC is undoubtedly among the largest MUN Conferences in the world. UPMUNC consistently attracts about 1200 delegates from over 75 of the top universities in America and from around the world. Even with this enormous delegate count, UPMUNC remains a truly personal experience because the Conference is powered by a staff of 250 motivated and passionate Penn students who often regard a United Nations simulation to be as, if not more, enriching than their Ivy League education.

UPMUNC is located in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, the nation's first capital. For the past forty-two years delegates have come together in this historic setting to participate in high-quality intellectual debate as they sit in on one of the structurally, geographically, and temporally diverse committees UPMUNC has to offer. This year our committees range from the Children's Fund to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 to the Mafia Wars of the 1920s. This concoction of history, legacy, and intellect contribute to the reputation of prestige UPMUNC proudly upholds.

Of course, your time at UPMUNC will not just be limited to committees. Delegates can indulge in the big city life as well as participate in an UPMUNC sponsored event every night, capped off with our one-of-a-kind DelegateFest on Saturday.

This year, we also plan to host two Model UN training sessions for all those attending a conference for the first time. Seasoned experts from our successful traveling team will make sure that these sessions give novices the tools necessary to jump into impassioned debate.

So, if you are a veteran delegate or a new kid on the block, a lover of debate, a connoisseur of international relations, and/or up for a good time, UPMUNC is for you.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me. On behalf of the entire secretariat, I look forward to seeing you this November.
